There was some blood, but nothing excessive, and no screaming or dying women and children or anything we felt would really trouble our son, so we allowed it at age 8. The issue they grapple with is a realistic one (should wealthy and powerful nations police the rest of the world or leave them to solve their own problems? Do they have an obligation to share their wealth with the less fortunate, or only to look after their own citizens?) and worthy of discussion with our children. For that reason alone, we would recommend this to anyone with daughters, especially young women of color.Īs far as the men are concerned, yes, the main villain is Black, but so is the hero. Nobody needs a man to save them or fight their battles. They can fight just as well and sometimes better than the men. It's possible we weren't noticing because what we were noticing was the positive representations of women, which we had not expected! All of the women in this movie are strong and capable. I have read some of the reviews complaining about the violence, and while I have to concede that there is shooting and people get speared? stabbed? (what do you call getting stabbed with big spears?), my husband and I felt it was less violent than, say, the Iron Man films (which we still won't let our 8-year-old watch) and the villains less scary than the Avengers and Thor films. It’s an innocent enough comic book movie that still manages to be empowering for races and genders that have, to perhaps put it too mildly, seen unequal treatment. As we are not always sure which word is currently ultra-taboo in today’s minefield, our family just points out the bad words and tries to teach avoidance and replacement with more descriptive terms. ![]() There is mild cursing, and a female is called a b-word. Comparing the action here to, say, the very believable violence in Captain America appearances-with the latter’s depictions of events we actually see in today’s real work such as the bombing of a building or the depiction of WWII violence (Ukraine, anyone?)-is a non-starter. My eight-year-old is all too aware that he just saw a make-believe cartoon bad guy get squashed by a make-believe battle rhino and not something he can or should worry about happening or replicating in the real world. ![]() The violence depicted is beyond the curtain separating a viewer’s reality from the elements of this movie that require suspension of disbelief. There’s punching and kicking, there’s spear-chucking and shock wave blasting, and there are apparent deaths from said physical conflict-but all of it is very cartoon-like. I'm baffled by reviewers who rate this as only appropriate for those aged 12 and up. The symbolism here contains a good message and is ladled on in a thick but not too heavy-handed manner. ![]()
